Not every working day needs a coworking membership or a hotel lounge. Sometimes all you need is a decent coffee, a table, and WiFi that won’t drop out halfway through a call. Torquay has a strong independent cafe scene, but not every cafe is actually set up for someone settling in with a laptop for a few hours, so we’ve checked each one on this list individually rather than just assuming.
1. Lighthouse Continental Cafe Bar
Sitting right on Victoria Parade facing the harbour, Lighthouse is one of the few Torquay cafes where a customer review specifically called out reliable WiFi, rather than it just being assumed. 2. Cafe 33
A small, quieter independent coffee shop opposite Torquay marina. Cafe 33 is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan around that, but it’s a genuinely peaceful spot the rest of the week for anyone who finds busier cafes distracting.
3. Burridge’s
Right opposite Torquay harbour, Burridge’s is dog friendly and consistently well reviewed for its food, coffee, and relaxed atmosphere. It’s popular, so mid-morning or mid-afternoon tends to be quieter than lunchtime if you need to concentrate.
4. Nexus Games Torquay
A board games cafe and community hub on Union Street with genuinely comfortable seating and a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere. It’s wheelchair accessible and dog friendly, and reviewers describe it as a peaceful place to settle in for a few hours, which is exactly what you want from a working cafe.
5. Bank
A cafe bar in a characterful building in central Torquay, with comfy armchairs and occasional live music. Open into the evening on Fridays and Saturdays, making it one of the better options if you work later hours.
6. Cooper’s Coffee House
Tucked at the top of Union Street, away from the harbour crowds, Cooper’s is a quieter, more local spot. Good for a focused working coffee if you want to avoid the busier tourist-facing cafes closer to the water.
7. Central Caffe (Torre)
A clean, calm cafe in the Torre part of town, praised for good coffee and a relaxed pace. Worth knowing about if you’re based on the Torre/Union Street side of Torquay rather than the harbour.
8. Meadfoot Beach Cafe
For something more scenic, Meadfoot Beach Cafe sits above Meadfoot Beach with outdoor seating facing the sea. It’s quieter than the main harbour cafes, and a genuinely lovely spot to work from on a clear day.
